Anyone that has been following me will have seen my fingers in many (seemingly unrelated) pies recently. Why on earth is she organising a Health and Well-being Fair when she's is a Photographer/Designer specialising in business marketing content?
Well, I'll tell you why; because I can :) ...OK, I'll elaborate.
Now bear with me here; what if I said you can be more successful in your business by helping others? No, a Health & Wellbeing Fair isn't related to my business, but I can see a need to bring together service providers and people that need them. I can, I'm confident I'll do a good job of it, so I am. I have followed my instincts throughout my whole career and haven't been steered wrong yet. I believe in my gut and believe that there is a better way of doing business that isn't all self serving. I understand that not everyone has the time, skills or resources to be able to do this, but if you do, and you can, I implore you to consider doing what you can to help others even if there is little to no potential of benefit to you. Call it Karma, or just some good old fashioned people buying into people, but it works. You get back what you put in.
Just because it has always been the case that all of your actions should be measured against its impact to your bottom line (however big or small), and anything that doesn't contribute is wasted productivity, doesn't mean it's the best way. If we carried on doing business the way things started, things would be very different (and much worse). It's simply evolution. And I believe that this is the next phase. So what is my purpose in all of this? Proving that. Sure you can look at it that there are long term benefits by helping others in that there will be a return in your investment, because they are more likely to use your services/recommend to others. Hey, if that's what you need to hear to do it; have at it, that's why. But I think it's bigger than that and I think a lot of people are ready to do things differently.
It may seem very idealistic, perhaps even naive, but I can assure you I am neither. In going about business in this kind of way, you of course open yourself up to being taken advantage of, as I have, as I will again. But I'll tolerate the 10% of takers for the 90% of people that I can help and bring about a better future with. Besides you have to encounter the takers at some point so you know what to look out for ;).
Everyone is motivated by something; money, being the best, feeling valued. For me it's making people happy. Helping people accomplish their goals, fulfilling their dreams or whatever it is that it takes to make them happy and knowing I got to be a part of making that happen. And I want to do this on as large a scale as possible. So I'm going to keep on following that trusty gut of mine.
And I'll be doing that at the following events!
